TAKING A LOOK AT FATS

Some people recommend monounsaturated fats like canola & olive oil.  Others say polyunsaturated fats like corn oil are better.  The advice on fats is changing frequently and can be very confusing.

Since fat has over twice the calories by weight than carbohydrate or protein and considering the incidence of obesity in our culture today, common sense would say we should just limit the fat in our diet.

We find the research today encourages the type of fat found in fish ( omega-3 fats– DHA plus EPA).  The new studies show that omega-3 fats in fish oil protect from sudden cardiac death.  Men who survived a heart attack and randomly assigned to take fish oil (1 gram/day) were 53% less likely to die of sudden death than survivors given a placebo. (circulation 105.1987,2002)

The best advice is to eat at least two servings (6 ounces cooked weight) of seafood per week.  In general, fish like salmon, tuna, and farm-raised rainbow trout are the best choices for the omega-3 fats.

Footnote: 212 Market’s kitchen does not use peanut oil for cooking since the recent incidence of peanuts causing food allergies.  Peanut oil is an excellent monounsaturated oil and is a good source of cooking oil when acceptable to the family.

CHOCOLATE NEWS !

Now it can be told! Enjoying chocolate as part of a balanced diet may keep you happy as well as healthy.  Flavanols, a subclass of flavonoids found in red wine, tea and certain cocoas and chocolates have been of special interest lately due to mounting research suggesting flavanols potential cardioprotective benefits.

Articles in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition point out the studies showing that flavanol rich cocoa and chocolate may inhibit platelet activity and delay blood clotting, effects similar to that of aspirin. The Chocolate Information Center Website will give you the accurate, up to date news.
